The Friends Academy boys’ golf team won the Long Island championship on Tuesday, steamrolling Sayville with an 8-1 victory on the famously difficult Black Course at Bethpage State Park.
Senior Charles Nevin led the Quakers with a team-best 7-over 77, earning a point for Friends Academy in the six-per-side team-play format.
Others earning points for the Quakers included senior Akash Agarwal (79), freshman Wallace Nevin (78), senior Eddie Englander (87), and junior Dylan Price (86). Friends Academy also earned three points for having the lowest aggregate from its five best scores (407 against Sayville’s 423).
The Quakers captured their first Long Island team championship in four years. The Long Island title came a week after Friends Academy won its second consecutive Nassau County championship — and a week after Charles Nevin won back-to-back individual Nassau County championships.
Nevin’s individual accomplishments, however, were just a steppingstone to his ultimate goal. He told Newsday: “At the beginning of the school year, all I said to myself was, ‘Hey, if I could do one thing this year, I want to win the Long Island championship as a team’ … it means a lot.”
Added Agarwal: “Four of our starters are seniors. We've been talking about this being our last ride as a team. It’s what we’ve been dreaming of.”
The season, however, isn’t over for Nevin and Agarwal.
At the Nassau County championships a week ago, they both qualified for the New York State championships — a two-round event that will be held June 7-8 at the Mill Creek Golf Club in Churchville, N.Y.
