The middle school years can be a challenging phase for students, and the transition to a new academic environment brings its own set of obstacles. From navigating complex social dynamics to feeling overwhelmed by the fast pace of learning, students often face significant social, academic, and personal challenges during this crucial time.

Friends Academy helps ease this transition for students through a 4-year middle school model. By starting in 5th grade, our middle school students have more time to adjust to the changes and challenges of adolescence and get the support and guidance they need to thrive academically and personally.

Why is Middle School Important?

Middle school bridges the gap between elementary and high school. Learning becomes more specialized, and students explore more advanced subjects. It also serves as a critical period for students' social and emotional development as they navigate changes in friendships, expectations, and their own identities.

Why Start Middle School in 5th Grade?

Traditionally, middle school includes grades 6-8 or 7-9. At Friends Academy, Middle School starts in the 5th grade. This additional year helps middle school students become more successful, giving them time to develop a stronger academic foundation and build stronger relationships with teachers and peers.

1. More Intentional Growth and Smoother Transitions

Young learners at the 5th-grade level are at a unique stage in their development. They’re starting to build deeper social relationships, create stronger self-identities, and figure out where they fit in the world around them.

Given the unique developmental progression during this time, the transition from elementary school to middle school can be a significant challenge for many students. Extending the middle school years to four gives students more time to adjust and settle into their new academic environment.

This additional year reduces stress and anxiety, gives students a sense of stability, and offers more time to develop relationships with teachers, navigate changing dynamics, and establish a strong foundation for future success.

2. Opportunities for Expanded Academic Experiences

In middle school, students encounter more complex subject-specific classes like algebra, biology, and world languages. This transition toward more specialized classes aims to prepare students for the increasing academic demands of high school and enables them to explore their interests in greater depth.

Extending the middle school experience to four years gives students more time and opportunities to engage in a broader range of subjects, extracurricular activities, and electives. Students are empowered to make informed decisions about their future academic and career paths.

Students can also explore more extracurricular activities and clubs with additional time. They can try out different interests, discover new talents, and find activities that align with their passions. Whether it's sports, arts, music, debate, or any other activity, having more time to practice, receive instruction, and engage in competitions or performances leads to significant skill development and improvement.

3. Personal Development and Individualized Support

The 4-year middle school model allows students and educators to build stronger relationships. Teachers have more time to understand each student’s needs and guide them more personally. It also gives teachers and support staff more time to identify and address specific learning needs, develop student strengths, and give additional support.

More time in middle school also means more time dedicated to each student’s social-emotional learning, character development, and life skills.
