One of the traditions for Friends Academy seniors is to participate in the 12th Grade Senior Reflections class. The course provides seniors perspective and insight on their school careers and Friends Academy journey and equips them with the skills of discernment and inquiry as they embark upon their next chapter of college.
In Unit 1, the class explores each student's unique identity and strengths by using personal artifacts to engage in personal storytelling opportunities across our class seminars. Students take the time to reflect on the significance of the object, its history in their familial and individual life, and the guiding philosophies and principles that they believe it represents for them.
This intrapersonal investigation is one that leaves students finding great meaning in even the smallest and most simple objects – even the objects they've perhaps taken for granted throughout their life journey so far. Whether it's a necklace gifted to them at a religious ceremony marking a rite of passage, a stuffed animal given to them by a parent in their childhood, or a journal that now holds their most personal thoughts, there is something special to be said about all such items in our lives.
