Middle School Immersive Spanish Lesson

Slowly, we have been able to relaunch student field trips since the start of the pandemic. Today, Veronica Guevara and Maxime Lavallee, our Middle School Spanish teachers, challenged their sixth-grade students with an immersive lesson in Glen Cove at La Placita, a Hispanic grocery store, and Cuscatelco Deli, where they picked up pupusas and tamales. The scavenger hunt assignment encouraged students to learn about Hispanic culture through the culinary tradition of Hispanic people.

The study of world languages at the Middle School level is based on an oral proficiency model, said Christine Saunders, our Middle School principal. “I appreciate that our students are able to learn off campus and in our community,” she said. “Students practiced their dialogue skills, including speaking, listening, posing questions, and responding. All of this reinforces their world language learning, their interpersonal communication skills, and their understanding of and appreciation for their surrounding community.”
