Writing workshop in our Lower School is not simply a time we teach writing, but an opportunity to foster our writers. First-grade authors in Rachel Curtis’ class recently chose a topic in which they are an expert. “How To” books really let our children shine as they draw on craft and their understanding of this genre in order to take on the role of instructor for their audience.
“Friends Academy is a Quaker school,” Mrs. Curtis said. “One way we are able to incorporate the Quaker process in writer’s workshop is through reflection. We reflect on what we have learned before beginning a new unit of study.”
