Eighth-Grade Entrepreneurship Class Meets with Mayor

Two weeks ago, Mayor Waylyn Hobbs Jr. of the Village of Hempstead issued a challenge to our eighth-grade entrepreneurship class. First, he provided a history of the Village of Hempstead and walked us through his career from pastor to mayor. Since his term began in 2021, the Village of Hempstead has seen 15 percent less crime, he said, and he wants it to return to its glory days as a shopping and visitor destination.

Mayor Hobbs challenged our students to reflect on how the village can bridge services to people without housing past the current working hours of local agencies currently providing help. In teams, our students will now brainstorm and develop ideas to present to Mayor Hobbs and the village.

“It’s a great partnership and I’m grateful for Friends Academy for sharing with the Village of Hempstead,” Mayor Hobbs said. “A fresh set of eyes. Young brilliant minds. I’m really excited to see some of the solutions that the students are going to bring.”
