Bringing Shakespeare to life, one soliloquy at a time

In Upper School, Advanced Performance Studies students presented their final performances of soliloquies from Hamlet. According to Director of Theater Andrew Geha, this was the culmination of their study of Shakespeare's masterpiece, which some see as "the invention of the human being."

In the course, students work to develop a number of sophisticated skills, including text analysis, deliver clarity of language (making the Shakespearean text make sense), communicating acting objectives with a range of actions, and delivering the personal stakes of the character.

Every other fall, the Friends Academy Theater Department produces a unique spin on a classic Shakespearean tale. Always accompanied by creative movement, musical interludes, and stunning sets, the production is delivered in full iambic pentameter. Past productions have included A Midsummer Night's Dream, Measure for Measure, and Much Ado About Nothing.
