In a unit that combines stewardship with a twist of science fiction, fifth graders dove into their first novel study of the year with One Small Hop.
Set in a future where adults haven't taken care of the earth, the grade had the opportunity to meet and interview the novel’s author, Madelyn Rosenberg.
Students worked together in reading circles to develop open-ended questions for Ms. Rosenberg, which also deepened their understanding of the text and invited them to consider what each can do to help protect the earth for future generations.
Through an interdisciplinary unit, students are concurrently exploring ecosystems and will be drafting an open letter to address a particular environmental issue of concern.
